AKIPRESS.COM - Turkmenistan traffic police officers take away driver's license from women, the Analytical Center for Central Asia reports.
Some sources said that traffic police seize drivers' license and cars are put in impoundment lot. At the same time, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Turkmenistan imposed an unofficial ban on the issuance and extension of driver's license to women and on driving of vehicle. The traffic police do not refer to any regulatory acts. The country's authorities and state media do not explain the reasons and do not publicly affect the issue of depriving women of driver's license. The same situation is also observed in Ashgabat, where the police stop the women driving and take away their driver's license without explanation, and the car is taken to the center of the traffic police.
Affected drivers complain to various authorities, however due to the bureaucracy and lawlessness, they cannot change the situation even when they turn to the Prosecutor's office. Women receive no answers. Some drivers in a private conversation with traffic police officers find out that this unspoken order comes from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
