Petrov Lake poses outburst flood risk in Kyrgyzstan

AKIPRESS.COM - The Petrov Lake has outburst flood risks, State Environment and Climate Committee Chairperson Dinara Kutmanova told reporters today during press tour to the Kumtor mine.
There are many such lakes in Kyrgyzstan, all of them are glacial lakes, she said.
"As you know, our mountains are young, seismically dangerous," she said.
"The dam is set up for protection from increasing water level," Dinara Kutmanova said.
The glacial lake outburst flood risk is dangerous since the tailing of the Kumtor mine is located at the lower level.
"These are mistakes at designing stage. Such risks needed to be taken into account during designing," Dinara Kutmanova said.
