Uzbekistan's Muruntau mine tops world's 10 biggest gold mines

AKIPRESS.COM - Uzbekistan's Muruntau gold mine tops the the world's biggest gold mines by production in 2020 ranked by Kitco.com. The ranking below developed on the basis of 2020 (calendar year) production figures reported by companies and preliminary estimates for Muruntau.
The Muruntau mining complex, consisting of open-pit mine and heap leach operations, is estimated to have produced slightly more than 2 million ounces of gold in 2020.
Operated by state-owned Navoi company, the mine is more than 3.3km long, 2.5km wide nearly 600m deep.
"Considering the stunning resource base, estimated in excess of 150 million ounces, Muruntau will likely keep its title as the world's biggest gold mine in the nearest future," said the report.
The Muruntau mine was discovered in 1958 by Soviet geophysicists Yury Mordvintsev and Peter Khramyshkin. The industrial production started in 1969.
The Carlin gold mine, USA, is ranked second (1,665 koz gold output). Russia's Olimpiada (1,200 koz gold output) is ranked third.
It was reported earlier gold accounted for arround 44% of export of Uzbekistan in 2020 (35% in 2019).
