AKIPRESS.COM - The World Bank will provide $36.5 million for rehabilitation of the Nurek hydropower plant. The respective grant agreement was signed between the government of Tajikistan and International Development Association at the end of 2020.
These funds will be spent for the second phase of rehabilitation of the Nurek hydropower plant.
The first phase of the Nurek hydropower plant's rehabilitation cost around $325 million. In addition to the World Bank's financing of $226 million, funding was provided by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank ($60 million) and the Eurasian Development Bank ($40 million). It was launched in March 2019.
The tasks of the first phase of the project included rehabilitation of 3 generating units, enhancement of dam safety with focus on protection against seismic hazards and floods, replacement of six auto-transformers used to regulate voltage.
The second phase of the project will include repair of remaining 6 generating units, restoration of the Nurek bridge, repair of the plant building and other key facilities.
