Uzbekistan declassifies information on prison inmates

AKIPRESS.COM - The number of convicts serving their prison terms in Uzbekistan make 22,900; 67 prisoners account for 100,000 people, Interior Minister Pulat Bobojonov said. "If you noticed, the previously secret information was publicized. In one word, transparency and openness in the penitentiary system will be ensured in pracrice. The information on number of penitentiary institutions and pre-trial detention facilities, their addresses, the number of inmates held there will not be secret information anymore," the Interior Minister said.
The State Penitentiary Administration of the Interior Ministry manages 43 penitentiary institutions, 18 of them are prisons and 25 are penal settlements. The system also includes 11 pre-trial detention facilities. The penitentiary faclities are 56.4% full.
The information on lethal cases in prisons and detention facilities will not be secret either, Minister Bobojonov said.
The information on activities and products produced in penitentiary institutions will be published regularly, he said.
