20,000 activists raising alarm over air pollution in Almaty

AKIPRESS.COM - More than 20,000 people signed the online petition to require authorities to recognize air pollution as the main problem of Almaty, Vlast.kz reported.
According to one of the activists, 20,838 signatures were collected under the open letter to mayor Bakytzhan Sagintayev on February 5.
On February 3, the environmental activists from AUA Group and other organizations launched online signatures under the open letter to the administration of the city.
In the letter, the activists said that the information on improvement of the environmental situation of the city that were included in the strategic development until 2025 are based on improper data. They said that about 70% of air pollution in the city comes from three thermal power stations and boiling stations that use coal.
In their petition, activists urge to recognize a critical air pollution as a main problem of the city and not deny the negative affect of the automobiles and recognize the thermal power stations as a sourse of air pollution.
