AKIPRESS.COM - Dosens of people on October 30 came to the office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Almaty with the request to help their relatives, who according to them are kept in the Xinjiang re-education camps, Azattyk reports.
One of them says that a 30-year-old relative of her husband, a citizen of China, was detained in December 2018 and sent to the camp.
"We don't know why he was taken into custody," the woman said.
The woman noted that the relatives this April sent a letter to the Kazakh authorities with the request to interfere in the situation. Authorities then three months later replied that they can not interfere the affairs of other countries.
The woman and 40 other people, whose relatives, according to them, are in the Xinjiang camps wrote a letter to President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mukhtar Tleuberdi.
The letter says that children of those detained in the camps left without parental care.
"Xinjiang turned into the prison," they wrote.
The letter was received by a representative of the MFA, who promised to hand over it to the leadership.
In 2018, the UN said that Xinjiang is home to about 1 million Uighurs and representatives of the Turkic speaking groups that are imprisoned in the re-education camps. Beijing in turn denied the statement but later it reported that there are camps but the Chinese side called them as educational centers, where people study the Chinese.
